The main objective of the conference is to jointly discuss recent aspects related to sustainable solutions for small water and wastewater systems (SWWS) within a framework of sharing experiences from the scientific, engineering, operation and governance points of view within an international scope. The definition of small was initially related to those treatment systems serving less than 2000 p.e. Nevertheless, in the last years that definition has been expanded to include industrial water and wastewater systems with loading rates similar to small urban systems. The main focus of the conference will be those explained in the proposed themes. Joint discussion of several of them will be highly welcome, especially those involving a sustainable point of view of the treatment in the area of technological applications for both developing and industrialised countries.
The conference will generate a set of proceedings that include the abstracts of oral and poster presentations. We expect that the state-ofthe-art for current uses and novel processes for further development and future application will be presented at S2Small2010.

- Low technology and appropriate treatment systems

- Wetland systems and stabilization ponds
- Energy saving/recovery from small W&WTS
- Operation, modelling and control of W&WTS
- Sludge production reduction and management
- Upgrading W&WTS
- Wastewater reclamation and reuse at small scale
- Water governance
