Anaerobic Digestion

The IWA specialist group on Anaerobic Digestion is an international forum for activities related to anaerobic conversion processes, such as: process technology, microbiology (physiology, ecology, population dynamics, genetics), reactor development, integrated approaches (including complementary technologies), stimulation of implementation and appropriate technology for developing countries.

It involves:

  • The treatment of waste streams, such as industrial wastewater and process waters, solid waste, organic solids, domestic and municipal sewage
  • Treatment of off-gases and biogas cleaning
  • Remediation of soils and ground waters
  • Anaerobic conversions related to metals, sulphur, and nitrogen
  • Biological production of energy carriers and chemicals such as alcohols, organic acids, reduced gases or electricity
  • Analysis and development of bioelectrochemical systems

The Group also produces annual newsletters. The IWA AD Group organizes and supports various workshops and conferences, which are either meant to deepen the knowledge of science and technology on anaerobic treatment, or provide interdisciplinary links for AD science to other fields of expertise. The last group conference took place from 28 August to 1 September 2011 in Vienna, Austria, and 13th World Congress on Anaerobic Digestion: Anaerobic Digestion in the City of Future planned to be in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 14-17 July 2013.

Anaerobic Digestion Modelling Working Group

Goals for the working group as it exists currently are as follows:
• Consolidate new research into anaerobic modelling
• Facilitate model use (e.g. by providing code)
• Provide advice on model extension and use
Chair: Damien Batstone (Australia)

Working Group on Harmonization of Anaerobic Biodegradation, Activity and Inhibition Assays (WG ABAI)

Standardize and compare methods to measure biodegradability and activity in anaerobic tests.
