Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water

The main objective of the Specialist Group is to stimulate better control of metals and related substances in drinking water and to minimise environmental impacts.

The supporting objectives are: [1] To provide an on-going forum for knowledge exchange in connection with metals and related substances in drinking water.
[2] To promote good practice in the control of metals and related substances in drinking water.
[3] To more critically determine the environmental and socio-economic impacts of control measures through the sharing of practitioner experience.
[4] To stimulate relevant collaborative research and demonstration studies.

Membership of the Specialist Group is open to all IWA members, either individually or through their employer. Membership of the Specialist Group shall also be open to all members of COST Action 637 (Management Committee and Working Groups) until 12 months after the cessation of COST Action 637 (ie: until November 2011), albeit only IWA members will receive broader IWA membership benefits.

The SG is producing a series of Best Practice Guides. We would value your comments on the first of the guides on Plumbosolvency Control. The Consultation Draft is available on the link under Newsletter item and the consultation period extends to 31st December 2009 .

Further Best Practice Guides are in preparation on:
• Sampling and Monitoring Metals in Drinking Water
• Metals Removal from Drinking Water by Treatment.

Others are planned on the rehabilitation of cast-iron water mains and metal materials testing.
If you would like to contribute to any of these Best Practice Guides, please contact the SG Chairman.

Training courses, one for each Best Practice Guide, are being developed and they will be piloted over the coming months. These will be promoted on a country by country basis. If you would like to get involved in this training initiative, please do contact the SG Chairman. We are keen to establish a network of qualified trainers, who will be paid for the training that they do.

The new Specialist Group is already strong in Europe and is actively seeking to establish and strengthen other regional sections, particularly in North America and Australia.

The vision is a self-funding, global network within the IWA, that can really make a difference in the field of metals and related substances in drinking water.

The group has an active group space for sharing information and dialogue among group members. Please visit the group space at: http://iwawaterwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/MetalsandRelatedSubstancesinDrinkingWater/ for more information.
