Microbial Ecology and Water Engineering

The Specialist Group was initiated in 1989 as “Activated Sludge Population Dynamics” (ASPD) and in May 2009 it changed name to “Microbial Ecology and Water Engineering”. The overall aim of this Specialist Group is to strengthen the co-operation between engineers, chemists, and microbiologists working with microbial ecology and various aspects of water engineering.

The goal is to establish effective science-based approaches not only for solving practical problems in engineered systems with mixed microbial communities but also to search for new sustainable integrated solutions using bio-technologies. Systems can be biological wastewater treatment (e.g. activated sludge, biofilm, granules, membrane reactors etc.), material recovery processes, production of bioplastic and other valuable products, and drinking water treatment processes. This SG does not include production of biofuels and biorefineries or health related microbiology aspects.
The scientific focus of the SG includes primarily identity, physiology, ecology and population dynamics of relevant bacterial populations and communities, e.g. microbial populations involved in nutrient removal and recovery processes.

The next specialized MEWE conference is planned to be held in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, July 7-9, 2013.
