Multiphase Flow and Transport of Contaminants in Porous Media
The formation of IWA’s Specialist Group on ‘Multiphase Flow and Transport in Porous Media’ was formally approved in March 2003. The group covers all issues related to theoretical and experimental investigations of multiphase flow and transport in porous media, which are of current relevance and permanent interest. In general, multiphase flow concerns the transport of two or more immiscible phases in a porous media, e.g., oil-water, air-water, oil-water-air, etc. Multiphase flows are of immense of practical relevance to subsurface contamination problems by nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs).
While NAPL contamination continues to persist as a problem in the industrialized countries, NAPL contamination has received little attention in the developing world. As lesser-developed countries continue their rapid paths towards industrialization, it is feared that the same problems that have been discovered in the US and Europe over the last few decades will occur in the developing world. The Specialist Group aims to coordinate the exchange of information (both fundamental and applied) for study of multiphase flow and transport processes from the more developed to the lesser developed countries. We propose to facilitate the exchange of information through workshops and publications that explain the principles of NAPL contamination in the context of the developing world.
