Off-flavours in the Aquatic Environment
The objective of this SG is to provide a forum to communicate knowledge, research and development into off-flavours and odours in natural waters, drinking waters and related systems. This forum is targeted towards specialists, managers, professionals and other interested participants from the water industry, academic institutions, research centres and policy makers. Included are analytical, research, public health, public perception, source water stewardship and socio-economic issues related to the causes, sources, mitigation and management of off flavours in the aquatic environment. Off flavours are caused by a diversity of natural and anthropogenic sources, and are major causes of public distrust of drinking and recreational waters, and increasingly an issue in farmed and wild fish tainting. Annual costs to the drinking water and other industries exceed millions of dollars and despite considerable research and progress, many issues remain unresolved. The SG has a symposium every 3 years, together with workshops and other events.
The 9th International Symposium on Off-Flavours in the Aquatic Environment, 14-20 August 2011, in Aberdeen, Scotland: Scientists, industry professionals and regulators from around the world shared the latest findings on the causes, chemistry, origins, mitigation and management of off-flavours in drinking water, wastewater, and related aquatic environments such as lakes, rivers, and estuaries. The presentations, discussions and a technical workshop highlighted the need for further research into the identification, prediction and control of off flavours, in particular at a large real-life scale.
2nd IWA workshop on Drinking Water and Off-Flavours in the Aquatic Environment, Jinan City, China 4-9 September 2011 was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Science and Jinan Water and Wastewater Monitoring Centre, and attended by international and Chinese delegates. The programme included presentations, interactive training workshops and technical visits to local water utilities and research centres.
The next Off Flavours Symposium will be held Oct 2013 in Tainan, Chinese Taiwan.
