Rainwater Harvesting & Management

Many communities around the world have always harvested rainwater for their freshwater needs because it was the simplest solution. It has been a traditional strategy for islanders and dry land inhabitants and it has helped them to conserve their ecosystems. Now other communities drastically affected by changing climate and rainfall patterns are using RWH to help their adaptation to these conditions. The objective of the group is to be a forum for water professionals to promote and support rainwater harvesting initiatives worldwide as an important component in the sustainable provision of freshwater to individuals and communities. The group seeks to achieve this by the sharing of expertise and experience among its members and with other interested individuals and organisations, by organising specialist workshops and conferences, the issuance of newsletters, and undertaking cooperative projects and activities with other groups of the International Water Association.

Activities

The RWHM specialist group plans the following activities:

1. A newsletter is produced annually with the main aim of notifying group members of various activities within the group and to provide information on other IWA conferences and recently published papers in various scientific journals. Group members supply the information for the newsletter. The newsletter also aims to publish profiles on the research activities of individuals or/and research groups that work on rainwater management.

2. To organize workshops at IWA World Water Congresses in different countries focus on the water problems worldwide and current issues like climate changes etc. These workshops present several case studies, showcasing the variety of technologies to harvest rainwater, the applications it can be put to and other benefits of rainwater management deal with issues on quality and quantity of harvested rainwater, flood control and drought mitigations.

3. Maintenance of a discussion forum for group members within the RWHM group website. This is intended for an easy and quick means for the transfer of knowledge and news. It is a forum to raise/ask questions, inform about new issues, exchange ideas, share experiences and discuss solutions to problems that may be encountered by academicians, researchers and practitioners dealing with rainwater management.

4. Develop an international database on the concepts for the rainwater management based around an existing database of experience in Korea.

5. Publishing various workshop/conference proceedings (under the auspices of the IWA) and publication of selected refereed papers in Water Sciences and Technology.

6. Organizing Group meetings at least once in two years to discuss the functioning and activities of the Group and to elect new Group Committee members.
