Small Water and Wastewater Systems
The SG deals with small water and wastewater systems serving individual households, a cluster of households or a community. The emphasis is on localised systems that lend themselves to the recycling and reuse of water, and the removal and recycling of nutrients. Small systems promote the closing of the water and nutrient cycles and thus achieve sustainability. More recently the Group’s interests have also included package plants and other systems serving small-scale industry.
During recent years the Group has increased its activities with complex systems treating industrial wastewater. The 9th IWA Specialised Conference on Small Water and Wastewater Systems took place in Girona, Spain, 19-22 April 2010 and the 10th IWA Small Water and Wastewater Systems & 4th Conference on Decentralized Water and Wastewater International Network & 3rd Specialized Conference on Resources Oriented Sanitation (EcoSan) was successfully held in Venice, Italy, 18-22, April 2011 (www.wastewater-venice-2011.com).
The specialists group supports a conference in Malawi on Water and Food Security 20-21 March 2012.
The next International Conference of the specialists group will be held in Harbin, China 18-22 August 2013. This will be a Small and Decentralized Water and Wastewater System Combined with Sludge Management Conference.
