Statistics and Economics
The scope of this Group is to provide a forum to debate how utilities are financed, how their various water tariff structures are, which measurement of performance they use, how they analyse their micro economics, how they manage efficiency, etc. Through periodical worldwide surveys the Group provides water industry statistics on countries water facts updating abstraction, consumption and water charging figures.
Workshops and seminars are organised annually and papers are written in the scope of sharing information and experiences focusing both fundamental and practical issues to be considered by an economic and responsible behaviour of water utilities. Through its activities the Group is focused on satisfying the needs of the Group’s membership while at the same time positively cooperating with other IWA Specialist Groups so helping to deliver relevant aspects of the Association's Strategic Plan..

Working Groups

Working Group on Statistics
Since the early 1990s the WG has carried out International Surveys to collect data on water production, water use and water charges and also on water regulation. The information is published as a leaflet at the biennial IWA World Water Congress. The last leaflet was published at the IWA World Water Congress in Montreal, September 2010, and a refreshed one is to be expected at the next World Water Congress in Busan, September 2012, providing the most relevant and updated International Water Data for discussion.

Working Group on Tariffs and Finance
The WG takes care of many publications in WUMI such as Water Regulation regimes, which came from a specific international survey, and water pricing: from theory to practice. The aim of this last contribution is to illustrate and explain, through case studies, why approaches designed by economists and approaches implemented by decision-makers in the field are sometimes so divergent. Also this WG is responsible for organizing workshops during IWA conferences on economical issues like funding, pricing, tariffs, etc.

Working Group on Water Economics
The main objective of this WG is to analyze and integrate economic aspects in the water and waste water management and decison-making process of utilities to raise efficiency and environmental benefits.
