Strategic Asset Management
Internationally, the water industry has come to recognise the value of sound asset management practice in delivering cost effective services to customers. It is driving to improve performance and deliver savings to shareholders, both public and private. With this recognition, has come the identification of a need for those involved in asset management (be it government decision makers, utility staff, consultants) to be able to share information and knowledge of asset management with other practitioners. The group is open to any IWA member, and would cover any aspect of water and wastewater utility assest management, of interest to the group members.
The role of the SAM Specialist Group is to promote the development of knew knowledge and leverage the implementation of best practices. The biannual Leading-Edge Strategic Asset Management Conferences (LESAMs) are a key pillar of the SAM SG activity. The 4th of these Conferences, LESAM 2011, was held in Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany. The upcoming one, LESAM 2013, will be held in September 2013, in Sydney, Australia. The main papers are published in the IWAP Journals and Newsletters. In parallel, the group (co )organises non-periodic events (e.g., workshops in the IWA Development Congress and IWA World Congress, IAM Conference in Marbella, Spain, in 2013) and provides keynote addresses and other presentations in many forums (in the past year: e.g. in the UK, Japan, People’s Republic of China, TaiwanChinese Taiwan, Portugal, Israel).
Other objectives of the group are to increase the participation from non-European countries, of young water professionals and of developing regions. The SAM Group operates an active website (http://www.iwasam.org/) and Twiter account (http://twitter.com/#!/IWA_SAM) to enhance and reinforce its dissemination activities.
