Sustainability in the Water Sector

The IWA Specialist Group on Sustainability in the Water Sector covers all issues related to achieving greater sustainability in Integrated Urban Water Management nested within Integrated Water Resources Management. The focus is on water quality, quantity and infrastructure in an integrated urban water cycle management approach, which will be particularly useful for those organisations wishing to achieve sustainable water supply, sanitation and stormwater management.

The IWA Specialist Group on Sustainability in the Water Sector takes a rounded approach to all the issues — environmental, economic, and social — to be addressed in achieving greater sustainability in Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM), nested within Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The Group builds upon core and distinctive strengths of the Association, in respect of understanding and managing water and water quality across urban systems (IUWM or total water cycle management). Water supply, sanitation, and stormwater management are thus central matters of concern. From this basis, grounded in an understanding of the associated movement of water, nutrients, and contaminants through the city, the Group is concerned to understand and manage the nature of the connections between the urban and rural landscapes across the watershed, hence IWRM. Currently, the Group is pursuing a strategy of developing resources for elaborating and communicating IWA's unique role in respect of sustainability, in particular, the IWA Global Platform website. This also serves the purpose of enhancing cross-cutting collaborative links with other Specialist Groups — for example, through the Sustainability Group’s involvement in the Task Group on “Wastewater Utility Greenhouse Gas Footprints” — and supporting IWA's participation in the global sustainability debate and related programs.
