Two bi-lateral agreements between The International Water Association (IWA) and the Peruvian Ministry of Health and the United States Department of State sealed the establishment of a regional IWA office in Lima, Peru.
Building on earlier work in the region, the agreements were signed in August 2009 and support the ongoing development of a Water Safety Plan Network in theregion. These plans provide the most effective means of consistently ensuring the safety of a drinking-water supply through the use of a comprehensive risk assessment approach that encompasses all steps in water supply from catchment to consumer.
The agreements which will encourage multidisciplinary teamwork and networking between professionals in the public and private sectors who are concerned about drinking water quality and related sanitary issues. The United States Government is providing seed funding to staff a local coordinator and ongoing technical assistance for the network.
