IWA Development Congress

The Development Congress series aims to set the practice and research agenda for water and sanitation services in developing countries and has a strong focus on 'what works' and on projects that have potential for large-scale delivery in a development setting.

The objectives for the Development Congress series are:

  • To propose and promote workable strategies and approaches to water and sanitation problems commonplace in low and middle income countries, with a particular emphasis on implementation and delivery;
  • To facilitate the transfer and bridging of knowledge and learning between a diverse set of parties with a stake in service provision in target regions and countries;
  • To broker new partnerships between different service providers in addressing these challenges;
  • To provide a pathway within the Association for those professionals interested in water and sanitation or working as practitioners in low and middle income countries, which is not necessarily provided adequately through other IWA events;
  • To promote active participation and interaction of IWA members, potential members and external parties primarily from the region hosting the event;

The 1st biennal IWA Development Congress was held in Mexico City in November 2009 and the next congress will be held in Kuala Lumpur in September 2011.
