Sustainability Prize

The general objective of the awards is to encourage reflection by researchers and practitioners about the implications of their work for sustainable water management and to recognize contributions which demonstrate significant progress towards the sustainable management of water resources in an urban environment.

This can be achieved in two contexts; research and practice. Two types of award are therefore offered. For each category (theory and application), a winner and two runners up will be honoured.

* IWA Sustainability Specialist Group prize for research excellence in support of sustainable urban water management.

This award recognizes excellence in any area of scientific research or theory development related to sustainable urban water management. Nominations for this award will be in the form of a published paper or article in any peer reviewed journal and the award recipient will be the author or authors of the contribution.

* IWA Sustainability Specialist Group prize for innovation in the practical realization of sustainable urban water management

The award recognizes innovation in the realization of sustainable urban water management. Nominations will focus on a project or programme of water management interventions and the prize recipient(s) will be representatives of the project / programme implementation team.

The awards panel encourages submissions from a wide spectrum of water sciences and projects. Sustainable urban water management can be promoted by advances in many areas including water treatment, water resources planning, education, pollution abatement etc., and by contributions which explore the relationships between urban, peri-urban and rural environments.

Proposers and nominees do not have to be IWA members but self-nominations will not be accepted.

Criteria for judging nominations for the two prizes are as follows:

The IWA Sustainability Specialist Group prize for research excellence in support of sustainable urban water management will be awarded to that contribution which, in the opinion of the judges, is the clearest and most significant scientific contribution to the promotion or realization of sustainable urban water management.
* The contribution must be evidenced by a paper published in a peer reviewed academic journal in the two years preceding the deadline for nominations
* The contribution must make a clear contribution to sustainable urban water management
* The contribution must clearly identify the innovative aspects of the work conducted

The IWA Sustainability Specialist Group prize for innovation in the practical realization of sustainable urban water management will be awarded to that contribution which, in the opinion of the judges, is the clearest and most novel example of an implemented urban water management solution promoting sustainability.
* The project must have made a clearly evidenced contribution to the promotion of sustainable urban water management
* The project must have clearly addressed an existing challenge to sustainable water management

The judging panel of the Sustainability Prize reserves the right to determine the eligibility of all entries and is formed by:
* Chair: Bruce Beck, University of Georgia, USA
* Harry Zhang, CH2M Hill, USA
* Steve Kenway,University of Queensland, Australia

The winner and two runners up in each category will each receive a framed certificate and an engraved trophy
Three short-listed nominees in each category will be expected to register for, and attend, the IWA World Water Congress at their own expense in order to attend the prize ceremony. These short-listed nominees will be able to register for the Congress at student rates.

An awards reception at the biennial IWA World Water Congress will be used as a vehicle for showcasing the six short-listed prize nominees. At this event the finishing order of the three finalists in each category will be announced and invited to present their work.

Submittals are electronic in nature and must be constructed in accordance with the specified criteria and requirements. A web and email based process allows for a cost-effective application process and a convenient judging process for individuals who are scattered around the globe.

Each entry must be accompanied by:

* an official entry form, which can be downloaded here

and needs to be sent to sustainability-prize@iwahq.org
