Global Participation in World Water Monitoring Day™ Increased by 73 Percent in 2010
More than 200,000 people on six continents monitored the condition of their local water bodies

A total of 212,502 people worldwide visited their local streams, rivers, lakes and other water bodies in celebration of World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) 2010, according to the program’s Year in Review report released this week by the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the International Water Association (IWA). The 2010 results represent a 73 percent increase in program participation from the previous year.

Within the next generation, 60% of the world’s population will live in cities or urban areas
requiring massive water and energy services and infrastructures. One of the key themes
discussed at IWA World Water Congress today and tomorrow is the nexus between water,
climate and energy.

The opening of the IWA World Water Congress today saw around 3,000 water professionals from

The Asia Pacific Regional Winners of the International Water Association’s Project Innovation Awards (PIA)
will be announced at an awards ceremony during the Singapore International Water Week 2010.

IWA Cities of the Future – Three Turkish cities to lead by example, 14 June 2010

Cities of Istanbul, Kayseri and Trabzon will participate in a ground breaking collaborative
project between international and Turkish water experts and local ministerial experts to create
an integrated, more sustainable model for urban water management. The Turkish Ministry of
the Environment and Forestry and the International Water Association (IWA) have today
agreed to implement IWA’s Cities of the Future Programme with the three partner cities over
a three year period.

Tackling the global problem of water loss, 6 June 2010

A considerable proportion of water utilities around the world face significant water losses from their distribution networks. To address this challenge, 400 leading global water professionals gather today in Sao Paulo, Brazil at the International Water Association (IWA) Water Loss 2010 conference.

Water and sanitation sector professionals advance Millennium Development Goals at 1st IWA Development Congress, 20 November 2009, Mexico City

Over 400 delegates from 60 countries discussed water and sanitation solutions in developing countries at the first IWA Development Congress, organised by the International Water Association (IWA) and National Autonomous University of Mexico. Held in Mexico City, the congress covered a wide range of topics from technical and management aspects to innovation and finance.

IWA to open a new hub serving the Danube and Black Sea region, 30 September 2009

The International Water Association (IWA) together with the Romanian Water Association has announced the opening of a new office to be based in Bucharest, Romania, aimed at serving IWA members and stakeholders in the region of the Danube and Black Sea. The office will be operational from November 2009.

Improving drinking water safety in the Latin American and Caribbean region is the focus of two new bi-lateral agreements between The International Water Association (IWA) and the Peruvian Ministry of Health and the United States Department of State.

Paradigm shift needed to advance water security in cities of the future, 18 August 2009, Stockholm

“Repeated water re-use and small to medium scale service delivery are one of the keys to securing urban water supply in the future”, says Mr Paul Reiter, Executive Director of the International Water Association.
“To overcome the looming water challenges facing our planet and to achieve efficient water and wastewater services, we will need to develop new infrastructure designed using truly different paradigms. Modifications to our current systems will not be enough.”
