IWA Outstanding Service Award
(Given in honour of Dr Samuel H Jenkins)
The IWA Outstanding Service Award is given for consistent and outstanding service to the Association. Awardees may be individual members, representatives of corporate members, members of editorial boards and permanent staff of the Association.
Current Award Holder
Dr. Shinichiro Ohgaki
is currently the President of National Institute for EnvironmentalStudies, Japan since April 2009. He was a professor at the Department of UrbanEngineering, the University of Tokyo until March 2009. He was awarded PhD in the field of environmental engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1974. He has long experience of education and research in environmental engineering, water supply technology, urban environmental policy and sustainable development at Tohoku University, the University of Tokyo, and Asian Institute of Technology (AIT, Thailand), and served on AIT as a Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees.
He directed and managed the Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, as a dean from April 2002 to March 2004. He worked as a project leader in several great research projects. For example, he managed the COE (Center of Excellence) program on Establishment and Evaluation of Advanced Water Treatment Technology Systems Using Functions of Complex Microbial Community (1996-2001) and then established the Research Center for Water Environment Technology (RECWET) in the University of Tokyo. He also directed the 21st century COE project on Center for Sustainable Urban Regeneration (2003-2007) as the Head of Center, at the University of Tokyo.
He serves on the Science Council of Japan, as a member of the steering committee (20th and 21st phases Vice President), and contributes to strengthening domestic and global academic network. In International Water Association, he was one of the Vice Presidents from 2006 to 2008, and a steering committee member of Health-Related Water Microbiology Specialist Group.
