International Symposium on Outfall Systems
15-18 May 2011
Mar del Plata, Argentina
Call for papers
Submission of abstracs: 15 February 2011
Notification of acceptance: 10 March 2011
For approved abstracts: Registration of at least one author: 10 April, 2011
Submission of full papers: 30 April 2011
The main objectives of the Symposium are to advance the science and technology of all aspects of discharges from outfalls and their design, and to facilitate communication between the diverse groups of practitioners, regulators, and financing agencies in the field. The committees recognize the considerable potential for integrated systems of wastewater treatment and disposal that consider the response of the receiving waters and their natural assimilative capacity. The design and siting of submarine outfalls is a complex task that relies on many disciplines including oceanography, civil and environmental engineering, marine biology, construction, economics, and public relations. These diverse disciplines are rarely brought together and the strength of the symposium is the linkage of the expertise of IWA, which is more oriented towards wastewater treatment and water quality issues (e.g. bacteria modeling, nutrient transformation, algae growth, sedimentation and flocculation processes), with the expertise of IAHR, which is more oriented towards hydraulics and fluid mechanics (e.g. jets and plumes, stratified flows, coastal flows, mixing and transport processes, physical and numerical modeling, wave forcing, pipe scouring, internal manifold hydraulics). Exhibition International manufacturers, consultants, planners, and authorities are invited to rent exhibition space at the symposium.
Proposed Themes:
- Wastewater treatment for large outfall installations
- Stormwater and CSO discharges
- Cooling water intake/outfall systems
- Brine and industrial discharges
- Environmental processes and impacts
- Field measurements and techniques of hydrodynamic and water quality parameters.
- Laboratory measurements and techniques for hydrodynamic and water quality studies
- Materials, construction and installation technologies
- Numerical modeling of outfall systems
- Monitoring of outfall systems
- Coastal-zone or river-basin management with outfall systems
- Regulatory issues of discharges and receiving waters
- Public health and outfall systems
